3 Screenless Ways to Keep Kids Engaged

By Genevieve Cunningham

Keeping kids entertained is a chore. It's just not easy. Their attention spans are short and their ability to whine and complain can never be matched. We want our kids to be engaged. We want them to learn. But we don't have the energy or time to constantly engage with them. Unfortunately for many parents, getting your own work done means an excessive amount of screen time for kids. But of course, screens bring an entirely new set of problems. So what can we do as parents to engage our children without turning to the ultimate babysitter? Luckily, it's easier than you think. If you want to keep your kids involved and learning without screens, take  a look at these three easy ways to do it.

Play-Doh

It seems we've all but forgotten about Play-doh in our modern world, but it still works like a charm. Kids love Play-doh. They love creating something out of nothing. They love getting it on their hands and squishing it between their fingers. And because Play-doh requires 100 percent creativity, it's a great way to keep your kids engaged. Buy packages of Play-doh, set up a space for your kids, and let them create to their hearts' content.

Legos

Legos also require creativity. Give a kid a box of Legos and they have hours of entertainment in front of them. Don't give them a guide or a certain object to create. Just let their imaginations go. You might be surprised at what they can create all on their own without any supervision. Of course, be smart about your choices. Don't forget that small Legos are a choking hazard for small children, so buy appropriately sized toys for your own kids.

Arts and Crafts

Arts and crafts. Remember doing this as a kid? Maybe you made turkeys out of your hand. Maybe you made pumpkins at Halloween and snowmen at Christmas. Chances are good that you actually do remember these kinds of activities. Why do you remember it? Because it's fun! Pick out some age appropriate crafts, buy the supplies, and let your kids go. They'll be engaged, learning, and having a ton of fun all at the same time.

It doesn't take much to keep your kids interested. It just takes preparation. It takes a little forethought. Screens aren't the enemy, but they should definitely be limited. Use these tips to keep your kids entertained and engaged in other things, and you'll both be gaining big benefits from the effort.
