How Overall Flexibility Can Improve Your Life

By Genevieve Cunningham

Flexibility is a bit of a secret weapon. We all know that flexibility is important, but we really don't understand the power that comes with being flexible. If we did, we would put a lot more energy into maintaining and expanding our ability to move. In fact, we'd probably put a lot more energy into being flexible as a whole -- in the physical aspect and in life! If you're interested in really improving your life, take a look at why you should value flexibility in every aspect.

The Benefits of Being Flexible in Your Body

We really need to be flexible in our bodies. There are numerous benefits to a flexible body, but a few of the most common and most significant include:

  • Pain relief - The more flexible you are, the less pain you're likely to experience. You have to move or stretch a lot further before pain sets in, and in everyday life, this is a benefit that keeps you feeling comfortable and productive.

  • Injury prevention - Flexibility is key in injury prevention. If you're not flexible, you raise your risk of physical injury. And once you're injured, it takes a long time to heal and rebuild flexibility. The better option? Start improving flexibility right now and prevent the injury in the first place.

  • Mobility - We have to be able to move. We need to be active in life, and if we can't move, that becomes a lot more difficult. The more we maintain our flexibility, the greater our range of motion, and the more movement we can incorporate into our daily lives.

The Benefits of Being Flexible in Life

Though being flexible in your body is so important, it's not enough. It's equally important to be flexible in life. To be able to go with the flow. If you really want balance and good health, take a look at these important reasons for flexibility in life:

  • Less stress - When you're flexible in life, it's almost certain that your stress levels will be lower. Less rigidity means you're more able to roll with whatever is happening. And when we aren't concerned about having and doing things exactly a certain way, stress is able to melt away.

  • More opportunity - If we're not willing to be flexible, we might miss a lot of opportunities. Jobs, friendships, travel -- if you want opportunities to do and see new things, you have to be willing to loosen up and go with the flow of life.

  • Healthier outlook - Flexibility allows us to see life in a more positive light. We see more of the good instead of the bad. We see the blessings instead of the burdens. Does it take away all the negativity? Of course not. But it improves the way we see and participate in life as we move forward.

Flexibility is something we need -- and we need it in multiple facets. We need a physically flexible body so that we can be comfortable and prevent injury. And we need a mentally flexible attitude toward life so that we can lower stress and find opportunities. Work toward flexibility in your life, and you'll likely find your health and life improve like never before.
