Toxic Career Beliefs Holding You Back
By Sara Butler
Many people are too hard on themselves when it comes to work-related matters. In reality, every person in the world makes mistakes – it’s how you deal with them that makes all the difference. Mistakes at the office can be made worse by negative self-talk. So how do you quit this stinkin’ thinkin’? Here are a few beliefs you may have about work that you should let go of. That’ll start you on the road to more success and happiness!
Perfection Does Not Equal Success
Many people believe that to be successful, you have to be perfect. That’s simply not true. Human beings are imperfect by nature. If being perfect is the ultimate goal, then you may always feel a nagging sense of failure. Instead of working on ways to get better at what you do, you’ll likely get caught up in a cycle where you spend time lamenting your failures without taking the time to enjoy what you’ve actually achieved.
You Destiny Is Not Set
As crazy as it may sound, some people actually buy into the idea that people are either destined to succeed or destined to fail. You have to realize that your destiny is in your own hands. You can’t blame your failures or successes on things beyond your control – that’s just a giant cop-out. Sometimes things in life will be difficult and you’ll face challenges to get where you want to go, but your willingness to give it your all has a much larger impact on your life than the unseen magical force thought of as destiny! You can do anything you set your mind to, and that’s the truth!
Believing in Always and Never
Blanket statements about your habits and abilities such as “I never” or “I always” are just not grounded in reality. You might do something a lot or not enough but framing your behavior in terms like these is simply self-pity. Thinking in these terms allows you to believe you can’t change or that you’re not in control – don’t give in to it!
You’re Successful Only When Others Approve
One thing you have to come to terms with is that no matter what end of the spectrum people place you on, you’re never as bad or as good as they make you out to be. You can’t always turn off your inner voice when it comes to how other people see you, but you should take other’s opinions with a grain of salt. Your self-worth should only come from what you think of yourself.
