Chiropractic Help for Sinus Infections
By Sara Butler
Sinus infections can strike anyone at any time. Just ask the three million people who suffer from sinusitis and infections each year, according to the National Institutes of Health. Did you know that the chiropractors at The Joint Chiropractic can help you with your sinus troubles? It's true! Here's how!
What is a Sinus Infection?
Colds are quite common, but a cold that lasts longer than 10 days or gets worse after initially getting better may have morphed into something worse -- a sinus infection. Sinusitis is inflammation of the tissues that line the sinuses, while a sinus infection is an infection, viral or bacterial, of the sinus cavity. Both can cause a lot of discomfort.
The Symptoms
Your sinuses serve an important function -- they help moisten, filter, and warm the air you breathe. They secrete mucus, but sometimes an infection blocks the mucus from draining and causes problems.
How do you know you have a sinus infection? It's very common for a sinus infection to start as a cold. You then may notice these symptoms:
- A runny or stuffy nose that lasts seven days or longer
- The pressure felt behind the eyes or in the cheeks
- A fever
- Bad breath
- A cough
- Fatigue
- Thick green or yellow mucus draining from your nose
It can be difficult to determine if an infection is bacterial or viral, but one way you may be able to tell is if the symptoms don't start to get better after 10 days. If you've been sick that long, it's likely a bacterial sinus infection.
How Chiropractic Can Help
There are several ways that the chiropractors at The Joint can help you with sinus infections. They include two main things: prevention and improving immunity.
When you see the chiropractors at The Joint for regular adjustments, they're helping your body to work at its very best. That means they help your central nervous system to function as it should without any joint restrictions or dysfunctions that may impair its ability to communicate with every part of your body fully.
When the central nervous system is functioning optimally, then your body works better -- and that includes your immune system. So, when an irritant, such as a virus or bacteria, is introduced, then your body can deal with it effectively and you don't get sick or your illness is less severe.
