How to Balance Work and Home

By Sara Butler

You may be ambitious and there’s nothing wrong with that! Getting ahead in your chosen field is great but it’s also important to realize that you don’t have to sacrifice things in your life to get there. You can have it all, which means you can have a thriving career, health, and relationships without overloading on stress. Here are a few ways you can get ahead at work without falling behind in the rest of your life.

Prioritize Yourself

When you get up in the morning, don’t start working right away. Instead, stay disconnected until you get your morning exercise and breakfast. That way, once you get on a roll with work stuff, you won’t have to try to pull yourself away in order to take care of yourself and your health. Fitness should be put first!

Schedule Relaxation

There’s no shame in scheduling in a little down time. You may live and die by your work calendar, which is the exact reason why you should be working your own needs into it – not just the stuff you have to do for work. If you have to schedule a time to relax in order to make sure it happens, then do it. And it never hurts to have a Plan B, just in case your day changes around a bit.

Socialize Without Your Phone

Being social is incredibly important to your health and happiness. That’s why you need to make sure that you socialize without being connected. Devote some time every day to real conversations with those who are important in your life without getting interrupted by work.

Set Boundaries for Yourself

You have to be able to set boundaries with work in order to maintain a home life, especially if you have a spouse and children. Have clear times in your day when you have family time without emails or social media, then stick to them. It’ll help you to feel less overwhelmed and better able to balance the demands of your career with the demands of your personal life.

Have a Digital Curfew

Don’t take your phone to bed with you, otherwise, you’ll climb in with the intention of going to sleep and getting your eight hours but spend part of that time scrolling. Shut off your phone completely about an hour before bed and keep it that way until morning. That way, you’re less likely to be tempted!

Success means different things to different people. The trick is finding what makes you happy and successful, then pursuing it with balance!
