Easy Little Ways to Improve Metabolism

By Genevieve Cunningham

When we're young, metabolism isn't one of the things we tend to worry about. In most cases, we don't worry about it because we don't have to. Young people usually have fairly fast metabolisms. For the most part, they can eat what they want and not worry about long-term consequences like weight gain. As we get older, we trade the fast metabolism for a few extra pounds. Everything slows down, and losing weight becomes a real concern. But is this inevitable? Or are there ways to keep your metabolism up and running? If you want to keep your weight under control, take a look at these easy ways to boost your metabolism and get your health moving in the right direction.

Eat the Right Foods

Your metabolism is highly affected by what you consume. Some foods actually slow metabolism down. Junk foods such as sugar-filled sweets, chips, and soda would all fall into this category. And then there are foods that naturally boost metabolism. These foods would include vegetables, dark leafy greens, and foods containing higher amounts of protein -- such as meat. Eating a well-balanced diet is one of the first steps toward a faster metabolism and better health overall.

Add a Little Spice

Spicy foods can bring a little variety to your menu. They give it a little extra punch. They excite your taste buds. But as it turns out, spicy food can also excite your metabolism. The heat from the spicy food gets your metabolism up and running. Those who eat spice on a more frequent basis tend to burn just a few more calories during their normal day. To make this happen, include foods such as chili peppers, jalapeno, cayenne, and other hot-flavored spices and foods to your favorite dishes.

Choose Cold Water

We already know that drinking water is good for us. But if you want just a little more benefit, make sure that the water is cold when you drink it. Why? Because it will take the body just a little more energy to heat the water up to the proper temperature. And using that energy means burning a few more calories. It's easy, and it's definitely a small tip, but over a long period of time, it can help speed up your body's ability to burn calories more quickly and efficiently.

It's hard to keep our metabolism moving as we get older. It's the natural cycle of life. But we don't have to give up! Use these tips to help improve the speed and efficiency of your metabolism, and enjoy better health and more successful weight loss in your future.
