Little Changes That Improve Total Family Health
By Genevieve Cunningham
Keeping yourself healthy is a challenge. It takes work and patience and dedication. But at the end of the day, you only have to think about yourself, which makes it just a little bit easier. If you're a parent, you have a much bigger challenge on the table -- keeping your family healthy. Keeping your whole family healthy is a lot harder, as you have to take into account the needs of multiple people. Luckily, it can definitely be done! If you want to push your family in a healthier direction without massive change, take a look at these little tips that can make a big difference for everyone involved.
Nix Eating Out
If you're used to eating out multiple times per week, this one might be hard. Eating out is just so convenient. No cooking. No preparation. No clean up. But it's also a guaranteed way to spend more money than necessary, and usually, it's also a way to eat far more than is necessary. If you want your whole family to be healthy, eat at home and make it a family thing. Plan healthy meals, cook together, and sit down for a much healthier meal and a little together time.
Set Limits on Screen Time
Screens are addictive. The more we sit in front of a screen, the more we want to sit in front of a screen. Before too long, your whole family might be in the same room -- but with everyone staring at a different device! Instead, set a time limit on screen. Maybe everyone gets an hour outside of school and work to be on a screen. Maybe there's no screen time in the morning. Set whatever boundaries work for your family, make sure everyone is sticking to them, and you'll likely find physical and mental health benefits start flowing into your lives like never before.
Make Hobbies a Thing
Hobbies are really important. Everyone needs an outlet. We all need somewhere to put our attention. Somewhere to spend our time and energy. When we have hobbies, we are more likely to be active and more likely to keep mental health in check. Encourage each family member to find a hobby (away from screens!) and to participate in the hobby on a regular basis. This brings fun into your home while boosting health at the same time. Win-win.
If you want to keep your family healthy, it can be done. It might take a few changes and some discipline and conscious action, but it's absolutely possible! Use these tips to encourage health in your family's home, and protect and improve the health and well-being of your family for years to come.
