Be Creative With Diet and Improve Health

By Tom Herrin

A large number of people get into some pretty big ruts in life.  Whether it is daily routine, general activity, or foods, people tend to be creatures of habit.  Sometimes it can be a good thing, but at other times, it may seem to rob people of enjoying some of the real spices of life.  What people eat should serve some kind of purpose besides simply filling us up.  The best-case scenario is when foods serve as both a special treat and a healthy addition that can serve to prevent problems.  One of those super foods is berries.

They May Help Prevent Some Cancers

Antioxidants have gotten quite a bit of attention these days.  They are considered to be a major part of healthy foods.  Berries contain plenty of them which is believed to be helpful in lowering the risk of cancers that affect the mouth, esophagus, breast, and colon.  It can be a simple precaution to add berries to the daily menu to take every opportunity to fortify the body against these cancers.  Some berries even have what seems to be particular properties to protect against other specific types of cancers.

They May Improve the Heart and Circulatory System

Berries have shown some ability to lower the levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.  They also can have an effect on the cells of the walls of the arteries enabling them to function more efficiently in controlling blood pressure.  In addition, they can help to manage clotting.  Add to this the high fiber content of berries, and they may are a well-rounded food for maintaining better health.

They Can Liven Up a Menu

There are all kinds of ways to consume berries.  They may be added to salads or desserts.  They are great for breakfast.  Our family has them with yogurt and nuts or some kind of crunchy cereal.  They are delicious as a  light, cool treat for breakfast.  Many people enjoy them in smoothies or other drinks.  While they have many benefits when eaten fresh, or frozen, they also maintain many of their properties after being cooked.  Whether it is in muffins, cobblers, pies, or whatever, cooked berries can provide a little variety.  Think about adding berries to your diet for a real boost to your family's health as well a reward to your taste buds.
