What No One Tells You About the Gym
By Sara Butler
The gym is a great place to go. It gets you healthy, helps you work up a sweat, and if you go often enough, it’s a great place to make some friends and mingle. Most people know the basics about a gym, but they don’t know it all. Here are some of the lesser-known points you should know if you are a frequent flyer at the gym!
Clean the Weights
Weightlifting is awesome for you, but you shouldn’t touch the weights without wiping them down first. Think about how many people’s hands touch those weights in a day and that will help you to remember. After all, you have no clue where all those hands have been!
People know that equipment needs to be regularly wiped down before and after use, but for some reason, the weights get neglected in the wipedown process. Don’t neglect them, lest you pick up not only a few pounds to work out with, but also other people’s germs and sweat.
The Yoga Mat
Bringing your own yoga mat is a great idea, but just because you’re the only one who uses it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wipe it down. At least once a month, you need to take cleaner to that mat in order to prevent bacteria from growing. In the summer, you should do it even more frequently. A mixture of water and vinegar is the perfect solution to use! Soap or alcohol can damage the surface of your mat.
Take Care When Spinning
If you take a spinning class, then good for you! Spinning is great exercise. The only caveat with spinning is you really have to know how to position your body correctly to avoid a neck injury. Think about how much you’ve heard your spinning instructor tell you to keep your shoulders down; the health of your neck is the reason why!
Don’t Be Intimidated
If you’re thinking about joining the gym but feel intimated, you shouldn’t feel that way. There are all kinds of people at the gym, and less of them are fitness magazine perfect than you think. There are people of all ages and sizes at the gym, and they’re all there with the same goal in mind – to get healthy. You aren’t being judged at the gym by people who are sincere about their purpose at the gym, so don’t let that hold you back!
