How to Eat Well When Traveling

By Sara Butler

Have food, will travel. Whether you're jetting out of town for fun, for work, or for adventure, hitting the highway doesn't mean you have to give up on your healthy eating goals. Sure, staying on a healthy track when you travel can be difficult, but if you have a game plan, then it can be easy. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of nutrition when you're on the go.

Stay Flexible

So it's not realistic to pack your entire pantry into your suitcase, but that doesn't mean you can't make good choices. Don't adopt an attitude that says you must be healthy at all costs. Instead, stay flexible and focus on just one or two of your health and nutrition goals when you're away.

For example, if you're supposed to meet friends or colleagues for dinner one night, research the restaurant you're going to find healthy choices before you go. If you've been killing it with healthy breakfasts at home, then try to pick the healthiest items you can in and around your hotel for breakfast.

Research It

When planning a trip, you do a lot of research on where you'll go and what you'll do. But most people don't put as much thought into researching how they can incorporate their healthy habits. Before you go anywhere, think about what you can add to your daily itinerary to help you maintain your healthy habits such as:

  • Restaurants that allow you to enjoy local cuisine but still meet your healthy nutritional needs
  • Grocery stores that are within walking distance to where you're staying so you can drop in for some healthy bites
  • Find out if your hotel room will have a refrigerator, access to a grill, or microwave for cooking
  • Search online for local markets or other wellness and food events that can help you connect to the local culture

Take Snacks

Going someplace is fun and exciting, but don't forget you actually have to travel there first. Before you leave, think about packing some healthy snacks to help you make it to your destination. If you're traveling by car, pack up a cooler. If going by airplane, take TSA-approved snacks such as protein bars, beef jerky, or whole-grain crackers with you on the plane.

You can eat healthy no matter where you go as long as you have a game plan!
