Enjoy Cheesecake the Healthy Way
By Brandi Goodman
Cheesecake isn't normally boasted as a healthy dessert. When you create a homemade version, however, you can make a much more healthier option to enjoy. Enjoy cheesecake the healthy way by making some simple substitutions and trying a new recipe.
Use Greek Yogurt
A Greek yogurt version of cheesecake takes just eight ingredients. It has less fat than a traditional option. Use a low-fat Greek yogurt, low-fat cream cheese, and less sugar to help create this healthier alternative. It will still provide a creamy slice that keeps you satisfied. The Greek yogurt should be plain -- nothing flavored. The flavored options will change the taste of what you're trying to make -- even if you do something like vanilla. Flavored versions tend to have higher calories and more sugar anyways.
Make It With Fruit
Chocolate cheesecake, cheesecake drizzled in caramel, and many of the options you'd see at a restaurant such as The Cheesecake Factory are often packed with sugar. Make your cheesecake with fruit for the healthiest solution. You may still be getting sugar, but the fruit provides plenty of nutrients that are beneficial for your body. A raspberry cheesecake is a great possibility, though cherries, strawberries, and blueberries are also fine options.
Try Cheesecake Bites
You don't have to eat a whole slice to get your fix. Cheesecake bites allow you to have a small portion of the dessert you love without going overboard. Make a tray of these for a party and enjoy just one or two to keep the calorie count down from what you might usually indulge in.
Low-Carb Cheesecake
Low-carb versions of cheesecake are possible. The crust takes almond flour rather than the bleached white version or graham crackers. Cream cheese, powdered erythritol, eggs, lemon juice, and vanilla extract are all that's needed for the filling. This is a keto-friendly choice.
Sugar-Free Cheesecake
Sugar-free really means sugar substitute. Rather than putting traditional sugar in it, you use coconut sugar or another substitute such as Swerve. Eggs, vanilla extract, cream cheese, and sour cream make up the remainder of the recipe.
A National Cheesecake Day arrives near the end of July. Don't get your fix with a store-bought cheesecake packed with sugar. Make your own at home and you can have a healthy slice that's better for your brain and body. It will satisfy your cravings without making you crash.
