Making the Most of Your Workout Routine

By Stepy Kamei

The benefits of working out on a regular basis are widely known. People who stick to an exercise routine as part of a healthy lifestyle tend to experience better heart health, improved sleep, reduced stress, and a lower risk for many health issues, including obesity and cardiovascular disease. If you're ready to take your fitness routine to the next level, it's good to know what you can do to make sure you're getting the most out of your workout. Keep on reading to pick up some useful advice to boost your workout.

Exercise in the Morning

Fitness experts tend to agree that the morning is the best time to get a good workout in. First of all, you're more likely to be in the right mindset to exercise -- you'll have fewer distractions, you won't have been worn out from the tasks of the day, and if you live in a warm climate, you won't have to deal with excessive heat. The morning simply offers more ideal conditions for you to really focus on your exercise routine. Plus, you'll have more energy and focus than later on in the day.

What to Eat Before and After

It's important to think of food as fuel for the body -- you want to be getting enough food, and enough nutrients, in order to sustain your workouts. Consider a light meal with plenty of protein before you exercise. Greek yogurt, a hardboiled egg, or a protein shake with a handful of mixed nuts are great options. After your workout, be sure to fuel your body with a healthy and satisfying meal. Oatmeal, smoked salmon, and avocado toast with poached egg are great ideas for providing your body with a healthy amount of carbs and protein to ensure you feel full and nourished throughout the rest of the morning.

Alternating Types of Exercise

You may already know about the importance of switching of the types of exercise you partake in. Variety in your workouts ensures that different muscles are being engaged, which also helps prevent straining the joints and soft tissues. Alternating between cardio workouts, weight training, and yoga can help ensure the entire body is receiving the benefits of exercise.

You can slowly build up your workout routine in incremental steps. You may start by taking a walk in the mornings a few days a week. The next week, you can try adding a jog into one of those mornings. As the weeks progress, you can try adding sessions of yoga, weight lifting, or cardio workouts into your morning routine.
