Stop Skipping Meals: It Won't Help You Lose Weight

By Virginia Laird

Many people believe skipping a meal can help with weight loss. This is a myth proven by research. It is not even up for debate; the body will undergo change with the intake of fewer calories. These changes are not beneficial. Research suggests the effects of skipping a meal can be different from one person to the next according to the age, general health, and diet of the subject. There are a few things that do happen as meals are skipped including:

  • Wrong type of weight loss
  • Increase the risk of some diseases
  • Missed meals can cause binge cravings for junk
  • Exercise may not sound appealing

Your Body May Experience the Wrong Type of Weight Loss

Skipping meals can decrease the total amount of calorie intake for the day. Fewer calories can help to jumpstart weight loss. However, skipping meals can only help temporarily as it can cause the body to go into starvation mode. When the body reaches this point, it begins storing fat which can ultimately lead to increased belly fat.

You May Increase the Risk of Some Diseases

Research shows that people who skip breakfast are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Even more research suggests that some who skip out on breakfast have an increased risk of heart disease. Fueling the body regularly and a balanced diet is a key to prevention of many diseases. Help your body stay healthy by making certain to eat at least three balanced meals a day.

You May Find Yourself Reaching for Junk

If you have ever been the one to skip out on lunch only to be starving on the drive home thinking every single fast food restaurant you pass sounds appealing, you are not alone. People who choose to skip meals are more likely to stop by a fast food restaurant and pick up something before getting home. The food is likely to be something that has more calories, fat, and sodium than whatever could have been eaten at the skipped meal.

Exercise May Not Sound Appealing

Because food gives the body energy, when skipping a meal, working out can sound dreadful. With no fuel in the tank, your energy level could hit a low after a stressful day. This can be difficult to overcome and the exercise battle becomes a lost cause. Because exercise plays an important role in maintaining overall health, it is important to get a little exercise each day.
