5 Tips to Avoid the Back-to-School Blues
By Virginia Laird
Are your students ready to head back to the classroom? Many are not. As parents, we may be ready to get back to normal and routine life, but our children would have summer last a few more months. Students each year report having the back-to-school blues within a matter of a few days after school goes back in session. There are several things a student can do to prevent the onset of these blues, including:
- Start each day with a good breakfast
- Finish homework early
- Enjoy the outdoors
- Get some exercise
- Prioritize sleep
Start Each Day with a Good Breakfast
Breakfast is important, especially when heading back to the classroom. When students go to school on an empty stomach, there is a much greater chance that hunger will get in the way of focus and the ability to complete the needed class work.
Finish Homework Early
Instead of procrastinating homework, getting it done right after school can help keep each student focused and determined. Putting it off can prevent it from being completed at all. Parents should always encourage students to get the work done early, then once it is complete, help the student relax.
Enjoy the Outdoors
Getting outside can help clear the mind. After a stressful day, students as well as parents could benefit from sitting outside, going for a walk, or enjoying another outdoor activity. It is important to find something that is relaxing daily to help release stress.
Get Some Exercise
Exercise is another powerful way to decrease stress. It does not have to be a formal workout class. Exercise could be a sports practice, a walk, or bike ride. Any activity that burns some energy will work. The last thing students need to do after a long day of sitting in a desk is sit in front of a television or computer screen and play games.
Prioritize Sleep
Sleep is important to being successful. This is where parents need to add some guidance. Getting enough sleep can help get each student a great start to the next day. It can be shocking to see how much sleep the sleep foundation recommends for various age groups.
As your kids get back into the swing of school, help them apply these tips to decrease their chances of developing the back-to-school blues. Good luck and may your kids have the best teachers ever!
