Vacationing Sans Back Pain: It is Possible

By Virginia Laird

Vacationing should provide some of the most excitement of your family's time spent together, and for many this is the case. However, there are millions who find their vacation to be stressful and quite painful. Chiropractors admit that millions report having suffered with back pain after spending time on a vacation. Rather than allowing such pain to take over your trip, chiropractors offer a plethora of tips to help keep such pain at bay. These tips include:

  • Pack light
  • Plan to wear comfy clothing
  • Get enough rest

Pack Light

The chiropractor's first rule of traveling is to pack light. This can be applied to your trip in a variety of ways. It can mean to pack very little. Or, it can mean to pack in smaller bags to keep each one that you will lift on the lighter side. Still, there are some who suggest this means to pack in suitcases with wheels. No matter how you decide to pack, chiropractors insist that the root meaning of the idea to pack light is simply to pack your things in a manner to keep a heavy load off of your back. Research suggests that lifting heavy loads can lead to shifting of the spine, which can cause restrictions within the joints, leading to pain.

Plan to Wear Comfy Clothing

Although you may have a desire to dress in your best while traveling, chiropractors advise that wearing comfy clothing, especially shoes, is critical while trying to prevent back pain. It is no secret that the shoes you choose can have a major impact on the pain you will or will not suffer. Chiropractors suggest that extremely high heels, as well as shoes which offer zero support are both bad for the back. Rather, it is advised that you should wear tennis shoes to keep your back (and feet) comfy and up to the task of sightseeing while on vacation.

Get Enough Rest

Most of those who are on vacation try to cram as much into a single day as possible. This often leads to getting up early and staying up too late, packing in as many sights as possible. Chiropractors suggest that having a lack of rest can be the culprit of back pain. Therefore, chiropractors advise that you plan to get plenty of sleep while on vacation to help ease pain and tension in the body. It is suggested that the average adult get at least six hours of sleep each night. Children require much more than this. Make sure as you enjoy your summer vacation that you allow for plenty of time to sleep.

If you are one who has trouble with back pain being more severe than these tips can help, it can be wise to consider adding routine chiropractic care to your healthcare regimen.
