Bring a Rainbow Down to the Table for Health

By Tom Herrin

Making choices at mealtime is something everyone does.  It is an opportunity to make a healthy impact on personal well-being.  When people see a plate with lots of colors on it in the way of foods, they can rest easy in feeling that they have a good representation of the kinds of foods that help provide better health.  Many schools are encouraged to have foods that show wide samples of colors.  This is a great way to encourage kids to make better choices.  Once they have been able to establish these good choices, they may well have begun to form some good habits that can carry over to their adult life.

Pile on the Reds

Foods that have red colors are pretty well known to have a positive contribution to a healthier overall diet.  Some of these red foods are believed to help curb some cancers such as those of the esophagus and prostate.  Some of them are also thought to make a substantial contribution to protecting the heart and circulatory system.  Some of these red foods include strawberries, watermelons, beets, red peppers, and lots of others.

Yellows Are Always Good

All things yellow are not actually that color.  Some foods that share those properties are a shade of yellow such as orange.  They still serve some of the same purposes.  Most are known to be helpful to the eyes.  As the saying goes, people don't see rabbits with glasses.  Carrots are one of those foods that is easy to include in a diet.  Others are squash, cantaloupe, pumpkins, peaches, etc.  This can be a fun list to make.  There are lots of foods that can go here.

Picture the Food on Your Plate

A good visual image can help to guide your thoughts as you plan for your meals with color in mind.  Thinking color may brighten your outlook.  A meal that is appealing to the eye may also boost health.  When you are looking for color, it makes it a lot easier to decide.  When you have all of those colors in place, your meal may be complete.  It can serve as a great guide that doesn't require a lot of thinking.  Just about everyone wants to have better nutrition, they just don't always have the determination to follow through with it.  Using colors as a guide may be a simple way to accomplish that.
