Longer Life Is Not an Impossible Dream

By Tom Herrin

Many people are concerned about how they can lengthen their life expectancy.  While it may seem like a wish rather than a reality for many, we do have some ability to manage our health so that we may be able to increase our possibilities.  The good thing is that there are lots of actions that may be taken without having to do every one.  We will look at a few that may be considered to possibly lengthen life.  There are many more for any of us to choose from.

Move as Much as Possible

The notion of remaining active is not new.  We are often told about the need for exercise, and we may see it as one more chore.  The fact is, simply moving more may do a lot for us.  Too many times, we sit and work a remote or do something else that allows us to limit our movement.  Making a point of finding ways to force ourselves to walk is usually a good idea.  Parking a little farther away or making an extra trip on foot can be a start.  For me, I sometimes ride my bicycle some place such as the post office to mail a letter and can kill two birds with one stone.

Health Screenings Are a Good Practice

Even though we often resist the idea, health screenings can be really important.  As we age, it is often recommended that we begin getting colonoscopies.  They can help to detect some potentially serious problems early on.  It is also important for us to get skin cancer screenings, especially if we spend much time outdoors.  There are other kinds of screenings as well.  Anyone who may be prone or particularly susceptible to some issues should consider checking into what they may be able to check.

Stay Mentally Fit

Keeping ourselves in good mental condition is just as important as physical.  We may do a lot of this by using our brain as much as possible.  Any thinking activity may help.  Crossword puzzles, or anything similar, may stimulate our thought.  Other games that involve strategy can help us to continue to develop better thinking skills.  Using our memories is another way to preserve the brain.  The point is that we must recognize that our brain is as much a part of our body as any other part.  Any effort to increase life span should include all of it.
