Good Breathing May Require Practice, Too

By Tom Herrin

Many people often refer to something as simple as breathing.  It is an obvious use of an example of something that everyone knows is the most basic of functions.  It is not something that we ever need to learn, such as walking.  We breathe from birth and naturally adjust it as we carry out different levels of physical activity.  It is also a function that many people have trouble with depending on where they live and what they do for a living.  Many have allergies to some of the various kinds of plant life.  Others may have serious breathing issues due to environmental conditions or air quality.  While breathing may seem simple, most of us can improve ours with some correct practice.

Exercises for Breathing May Work

We do exercises to improve abilities in many areas.  Breathing is no different in that there are many kinds of exercises that can help to improve the types and efficiency of our breathing.  Some of these focus on the lips, nostrils, diaphragm, and even noise-making while inhaling or exhaling.  Whoever thought we may need help learning to breathe?  With a little corrective action, we may be able to form some habits that can make vast improvements in our breathing.

Better Breathing May Mean Better Health

Breathing is so automatic for us that we often overlook the fact that there may be some ways that are more effective than others.  It is a vital part of our bodily functions.  If what we do fails us, we could suffer some serious health issues.  We are so dependent upon our oxygen intake that even minor changes can have dramatic effects on health.  We may see better muscle performance as well as better immunity.  For years, many coaches have focused on breathing techniques for their athletes.  The result was enhanced performance.  Some have made tremendous improvements because of it.

Better Breathing May Mean Better Rest

Rest can be a problem for all of us.  There are multiple reasons as to why we may be tired.  In recent years, many people have been diagnosed with serious sleep problems.  Some are genetic, but others may be the result of poor breathing habits.  If we can improve our breathing, we may be better able to relax and feel refreshed.  It is one more thing we may do to build overall health.
