The Real Reasons You Need to Ditch Energy Drinks

By Genevieve Cunningham

In recent years, the popularity of energy drinks has risen steadily. Even though most people are aware of a few dangers of drinking too many, these caffeinated beverages are flying off the shelves. A few won’t hurt, right? While it’s easy to think that one or two blasts of energy won’t cause much damage, there is plenty of evidence stacking up against having even one of these popular drinks. To keep your health in check, check out these reasons why you should ditch the energy drinks and find other sources of energy instead.

Caffeine Overdose is a Real Thing

We don’t hear very much about it, but it is actually a possibility to overdose on caffeine. While it takes large amounts to do so, the possibility can sneak up on a person before they realize. Even if only one or two energy drinks are consumed, they may get additional caffeine through chocolate, coffee, or other foods and drinks. If too much is consumed within a certain period, it can cause an increased heart rate, which can heighten the chances of cardiac problems, and in severe cases, even death.

Energy Drinks are Addictive

Let’s not forget that caffeine, in and of itself, is quite addictive. In an energy drink, the addictive property is still present. Once a person begins the energy drink habit, it can quickly turn into an addiction to the caffeine and other ingredients that give an energy boost. This can be harmful to overall health as well as hard on the wallet.

Energy Drinks Can Exacerbate Current Conditions

Many people run into problems with energy drinks because they tend to exacerbate problems that are already present. Those who suffer from heart conditions, blood pressure problems, and many other health conditions can suffer serious consequences as the result of energy drinks. Sometimes, these conditions are hidden to the consumer, so they are unprepared to deal with the consequences. The best course of action? Just skip the drink and protect yourself from any potential harmful effects.

The quick energy and ability to stay awake might be quite tempting, but don’t succumb to the pressure if you want to keep your health intact long-term. Energy drinks can truly make a negative impact on your health. With other healthier options available, do your best to avoid these quick fixes and go for a safe alternative to more energy instead.
