Don't Let Insomnia Win! Use These Tips to Beat It

By Genevieve Cunningham

Too many people are familiar with the feeling that comes from a lack of sleep. Itchy eyes, foggy brain, irritable mood. It’s the worst! And when insomnia sets in and won’t let go, it can make for some long nights and even longer days. Unfortunately, getting rid of insomnia is often harder than it needs to be. If you’re ready to shake insomnia and feel rested and refreshed, take a look at these tips to try tonight.

Transform Your Nighttime Ritual

Nighttime habits can make or break your sleep. If you don't have a nighttime ritual, it's time to set one up. This might include some quiet time, a hot shower, a good book, hot tea, or anything else that makes you feel calm and relaxed. The idea is to make your ritual the same every night. As you do this, your body and mind will get used to the ritual and will begin to wind down when you begin it everyday. Over time this can mean more and higher quality sleep to help you feel better every day.

Control Your Diet

Diet affects everything. If you're having trouble sleeping, it can be a good idea to look to your diet first. Are you consuming a lot of junk food? This can make you feel sluggish, but can also interrupt your sleep patterns. Are you consuming too much caffeine? This can, for obvious reasons, keep you up at night. Clean up your diet as much as you can, and you may find your sleep improve in no time at all.

Manage Movement

Our bodies were meant to move. If you're not getting any movement at all, it can actually make it more difficult to sleep at night. Your body simply hasn't burned the energy that it needs to in order to be tired. On the opposite end, moving too late in the day can get your brain energized and keep you from falling asleep. It's important to find that sweet spot for your exercise time. For most people it needs to be at least a couple of hours before bedtime so that you can wind down and find your sleep properly. Manage your movement, and you may find that your sleep is better off.

Insomnia is an extremely frustrating ailment to deal with. And it can be even more frustrating to try and treat it. While these tips may not work for everyone, giving them a try may be all that you need to get your sleep under control. Try them one at a time to see what may work best for you. With a little bit of experimenting and some patience, you may be able to finally find your sleep and feel better than ever every day.
