How Setting Goals Can Change Your Health

By Genevieve Cunningham

Everyone has heard of goal setting. This is something that we're taught when we're young. The goal is small at that age. We might have a goal to tie our shoes and then to make a certain grade and then to learn to drive a car. At some point, our goals become more serious. We want to get into a certain college or land a certain job. Goal setting can be good! And it can be especially good when it comes to health. If you're ready to improve your health and body and feel your best, take a look at why goal setting may be a great idea.

Helps With Motivation

Setting goals gives you something to work toward. And when we have something to work toward, we're more likely to maintain motivation and stick with it! Since motivation is one of the hardest parts of working out and eating healthy, having a goal can get you through the struggle and lead you toward success a little faster.

Forces Assessment

Having a goal forces you to assess your current health as well as your habits. Once you reach a goal, you have to take a long hard look at yourself all over again. Is there room for improvement? Should you change tactics? Are you moving in the right direction? This requires you to study yourself and make positive changes. And if better health is your ultimate long-term goal, then reassessment is an important part of the process.

Changes the Target

A moving target is harder to hit. But in this scenario, it's not so much of a moving target as it is a changing target. Setting goals gives you the opportunity to feel success. And then you get to set a new goal and do it all over again. The more times you meet a goal, the more times you get to make a new one. And having new goals and better goals let you see how far you've come and how productive you've been toward your dream body.

It's really important to set goals. It's important to know what you're working toward. If you haven't taken this approach yet, it's time to start! Set a small goal or two and then work toward them. Don't be too lofty and don't get discouraged. Slow and steady wins the race, and setting goals helps you get there twice as fast.
