Preventing Injuries Caused by Exercising

By Lexi Herrin

It doesn't matter how much you exercise, there is always a chance that you will get injured if you aren't doing it the right way. Whether you have been exercising regularly for as long as you can remember or you are just getting started, there are several things that you can do to prevent injuries caused while exercising. Some of the things that you can do include using the proper technique, a gradual approach, warm-ups, and so much more.

Proper Technique

One of the biggest causes of injuries while exercising is the lack of proper technique. If you don't use the proper technique while exercising, you can end up with injuries such as sprains, muscle strains, ligament and muscle tears, or even tendinitis. Always make sure that you are using the proper technique when exercising in order to decrease your chances of injuries.

A Gradual Approach

Another thing that you can do to prevent overuse and injuries is to use a gradual approach when exercising. If you do too much at once, then your chances of injury are increased severely, but if you slowly increase your speed and intensity the less likely you are to receive an injury. The greatest risk of being injured happens when you change your exercise program too quickly. A gradual approach to exercise is definitely the safest way to go.

Warm Up

One of the most important and best things that you can do to prevent injury during or after exercise is warming up beforehand. Warm-ups get your body ready for the intense workout. The "colder" your muscles are the more prone they are to injury. Some of the best ways to warm up is stretching. When stretching, try to stick to active stretching rather than passive stretches. Passive stretches are when you stretch and hold the stretch and they tend to lead to more muscle tears. Active stretching such as arm or leg lifts for a few minutes can significantly decrease your chances of tears, sprains, and strains.
