Who Wants to Get Hurt Getting in Shape?

By Tom Herrin

Whenever someone finally gets up the enthusiasm to begin some kind of a routine of exercise, they are usually excited to see some results.  They don't happen overnight.  Anything worthwhile takes planning.  It also requires patience and a lot of it.  In the drive to see progress in a hurry, many people tend to overlook some of the critical parts to any good workout plan.  One of the big ones is to make certain that, in the process of getting in much better condition, they don't injure themselves and slow the whole thing down.  A good plan will include considering just what it takes to make it complete.  There are more than a few boxes to have on that checklist.

Start Slow

When anyone wants to get going with their new program, it is important to avoid starting at a level that is too much for their conditioning.  If it is working with weights, it is much better to start with something lighter and add as they see they are able to do it with good form.  Some people start with heavy weights only to strain something at the start.  This can be discouraging and cause them to take a period of time off before they have done anything.  If they are into running, it is better to learn a pace and distance before running something too challenging.

Be Aware of the Outside Conditions

No one should be surprised about what it is like outdoors by jumping out there and finding it unbearable.  If it is warm and humid, it is much better to know that ahead of time.  This will allow them to plan for a slower pace.  They can also dress in clothing suitable for the situation.  If it is cold, they will need to allow for a longer warming up period and know when their body does not seem to be warming adequately.

Get Educated

Each of us needs to know as much as possible about how our bodies respond to different situations.  We never want to go out to be physically active without being prepared.  I always have to go outside and test the waters before I do something.  This allows me to get a feel as to how I should dress and what level of activity would be best for me to pursue.  If we start out right, we can make our sessions successful and free from injury.  That is something we can smile about.
