Biking: It's Healthy and Fun for the Family

By Virginia Laird

I have a genuine love for exercise which I hope to teach to my children. Like many, I try to set the example by making exercise a priority. However, one of the best ways to teach a love of things is to share the experience with your children. While most gyms frown on children accompanying parents in the weight room and fitness classes, there are other things which you can do with your children to lay the foundation of exercise. Going for a bike ride is one of the best and most exciting workouts for everyone in the family. Although every child may not be able to ride alone, there are a variety of devices to choose which can make taking the kids along easy. A few of these devices include:

  • Bike tow bar - This is a bar which attaches your child’s bike to yours and allows you to pull them along while they pedal
  • Bicycle trailer - This is a trailer which attaches to your bike and is usually completely enclosed while you tow it on your bike
  • Bike seat - This is a seat which attaches just over the back wheel of your bike allowing your child to ride with you

Fitness experts have put together a list of benefits for the whole family including:

  • It is a workout for the entire family
  • It lays the foundation of exercise for your children
  • It offers family bonding and mental health

It is a Workout for the Entire Family

Biking is nothing new in the world of exercise. Many turn to cycling as a way to build endurance while being able to avoid pounding the pavement in what could be a very painful jog. Relying on cycling as a form of exercise is a great way to prevent pain in the knee. It also can help you and your family have no boundaries when it comes to exercising. Choosing to bicycle over jogging or any other form can allow you to go wherever it is you have a desire to go and make your exercising different each and every time you go together.

It Lays the Foundations of Exercise for Your Children

Habits are not formed overnight, so when concerning yourself with teaching your children good habits, it is best to start them young. If you are concerned about teaching your children how to love exercise, cycling with them at an early age lays a great foundation for them to enjoy it. You can't go wrong with teaching your children to love exercise.

It Offers Family Bonding and Mental Health

Cycling is a great way to bond as well as improve the mental health of you and your children. Teaching your children the love of cycling can also encourage their love of nature. Health and wellness experts advise that time spent in nature can have positive impacts on mental health. Making mental health a priority is vital for your family.

Now grab those bikes and find your favorite biking path! Happy trails!
