You May Avoid Medication for Blood Pressure

By Tom Herrin

In today's world, it is very common for people to have issues with their blood pressure.  At times, it may be due to the fact that they have some genetic tendencies that make it more likely.  At other times, lifestyle choices may be their biggest source of trouble.  The latter causes may be some that are much more easily managed by making some simple changes.  For those who are willing to make the commitment, those changes may be able to help keep blood pressure in check.  Even for those who have let it get a little bit away from them, good practices may help to rein in their numbers.

Choose a Healthier Diet

When trying to have healthier meals, it is best to decide ahead of time.  Reading menus can be a start.  Most of them today offer information about calories and fats.  Planning ahead can make it work.  Even many fast food restaurants offer healthier choices.  Selecting smaller servings of fries, or healthier alternatives, can be a start.  For those wanting a burger, a child's plate may satisfy that while saving quite a few calories.  Staying away from snacks that have bad ingredients is easily possible by simply reading labels more carefully.

Limit or Cut Alcohol

While some people have some kind of alcoholic beverages on a regular basis, it can have some negative effects on blood pressure.  Making the decision to cut back can be a good step.  This is best if they decide ahead of time just what their limit will be.  As with so many other things, decisions made in advance can be the best practice.  Reducing alcohol may have a significant effect on blood pressure.  There has been evidence that drinking a small amount of wine each day can be good for health.  The point is to keep it small.

Check Your Own Blood Pressure

It is easy and affordable to check your own blood pressure regularly.  Home monitors are affordable and easy to use.  Doing this on a daily basis, and keeping a journal of your numbers, can be a good way to raise your own awareness of your blood pressure.  I try to monitor mine regularly and make any changes as necessary.  I have found that if I do so, I am able to make small adjustments and keep my blood pressure in a safe range.
