Are You Energized at Night?

By Tom Herrin

Each of us is driven by something different.  At the same time, our personal schedules may vary widely as we also have different internal clocks.  These clocks can tell us when to sleep and when to be active.  For many years, it was just assumed that most people were on the early shift meaning that they went to bed early and got up early as well.  This schedule worked well for those who relied on agriculture since they probably also ran on a schedule using available sunshine.  In today's world, it is not always the case.  Many individuals do quite well running on a later schedule.

Night People May Be Productive

Those of us who have internal clocks set for the evening shift seldom do well early in the day.  Given the right opportunity, however, they  may be extremely successful.  Attempting to force those of us who are designed for night work to adjust to an early schedule may be doomed for failure.  It may lower productivity and energy levels.  I am one of those night people, and I can attest to the benefits for me.  I have attempted to make changes, such as getting an early morning workout, and it has been a disaster each time.  My personal peak time seems to be late afternoon to early evening.

Some Love Days

I know lots of people who thrive on working days.  They are up early each morning and go to bed with the chickens each night.  For many of them, the only time to be productive is early.  They hit the ground running but may begin to run out of gas by mid afternoon.  Once they have dinner, they may be ready for bed.  This may all be a matter of an internal clock that is wound quite differently.  Our circadian rhythms, as they are referred to, can work for or against us.  Understanding it can help us to make the most of it.

Choose Wisely

When we begin to make decisions about things such as careers, we would be wise to consider our own internal clocks.  If we work best in the evening, we may want to find opportunities to work with schedules that allow us to be on task at that time.  If we live with others whose clocks differ from ours, we may want to make some minor adjustments to our alarms so that we can bridge the gap between us.  Either way, we can make it work.
