Why Walking is a Great Workout

Walking is a simple activity you do each day. It’s so easy, you probably don’t think much about it as you’re doing it! That makes it one of the easiest forms of exercise out there, even if it doesn’t register as exercise when you’re doing it. If you’re looking to get fit, then you can walk your way to better health and wellness. Here are just a few of the reasons walking is a great workout.

It’s Accessible

It’s easy to forget that walking is exercise. When most people think of cardio, they think of running or jogging -- but those activities are just walking at a different pace!

For many people, running simply isn’t an option, but walking is. It doesn’t require any special skills or equipment (aside from supportive shoes), and it can be done almost anywhere. It’s an uncomplicated workout that can be done by almost everyone.

It Can Be as Effective as Running

Runners may get all the glory, but walking can be just as effective from a health standpoint. You simply must know how to do it right.

Walking may make less of a demand on your cardiovascular system than running, but you can still get a good calorie burn as you challenge your heart and lungs by walking at a high intensity. The intensity can vary from person to person, but if you focus less on time and mileage and more on how you feel, then you should be on the right track.

It’s Low Risk

Walking doesn’t carry with it the same risk of injury as other forms of exercise. Of course, you can hurt yourself doing just about anything, but according to the National Safety Council, unless you’re not paying attention to the world around you as you walk, it’s fairly low risk.

Be mindful of your surroundings as you walk and gradually ramp up your activity. Doing too much too soon can put you at risk for injury. Balance your walking routine with other forms of exercise such as strength training and yoga.
