Tips for a Healthy Morning
By Sara Butler
Mornings can be rough. Being snuggly in your bed can feel so good that it’s difficult to get up and get going. If you find yourself rushed in the mornings, it can really sink your whole day. There are some practical things you can do to make your mornings a little easier and to set you up for success all day long.
Go Slow
Try to get up early enough in the morning to do a little meditation. Even just 10 minutes of morning medication can help to set you up to successfully deal with the stress of the day. Don’t check your phone when you first get out of bed or jump right into work. Instead, give yourself a few minutes to breathe deep and relax. That’ll help you start your day off right -- and on a healthy foot!
Hydrate
Your first impulse may be to reach for a cup of coffee in the morning, but it’s far healthier to start your day off with a glass of water first. Go ahead, set up that coffee to brew. But while you’re waiting, have a glass of water.
During the nighttime, it’s easy to get a little dehydrated. When you drink water first thing in the morning, you’re helping to replenish what your body lost along the way and kick-start your metabolism too. After that first cup of water, go ahead and have your coffee. Just make sure not to add too much sugar or cream to it.
Have Breakfast
Breakfast is an important meal because it sets up your metabolism for the rest of the day. Have a breakfast full of lean protein, healthy fats, and whole grains. Think avocado toast with an egg or peanut butter whole grain toast. Try to lay off the fruit juice, cereal, and bready bagels first thing -- they’re not a great way to start your day and will almost certainly leave you feeling hungry as the morning wears on.
Move
Moving around first thing in the morning helps to wake your brain up and get the oxygen flowing. This will help you to focus, manage stress, and reduce inflammation. If you can do some yoga or take a quick walk first thing in the morning, then it’s a great way to set up your day for success. Even just a few stretches before getting out of bed can help.
You don't have to be a morning person to have a good one. Just follow a few of these tips to start your day right!
