4 Mental Health Tips in the New Year

By Brandi Goodman

The new year provides a chance to start new routines. Your mental health should be at the forefront of your resolutions since so many people are letting their mental well-being suffer. Sure going to the gym and losing weight can help with some of that, but you really want to focus on setting goals that will help you keep your mind clear and free from the stress that can eat away at it. With four mental health tips for the new year you can become the best version of yourself with a healthy mindset.

Pair Healthy Habits With Guilty Pleasures

Healthy habits should be on your goal list for the new year. It's not always easy to make big changes, however, so these habits can be hard to start. Pair healthy habits with some of your guilty pleasures so you're more likely to follow through. For example, if you love to read murder mysteries then listen to audiobooks as you exercise. You still get to indulge in your favorite things while also starting up a new healthier routine. Reading is good for you and should be done sometimes, but it's better to exercise than spend all day in bed with a book.

Take Time for Yourself

Don't put all your effort into other people. Yes, you need relationships to thrive, but you also need some alone time so you can decompress from everything the world throws at you. Take time for yourself doing something you love. Draw a picture. Color. Exercise. See the chiropractor. Spend an hour or so each day unwinding and letting the stress melt away.

Turn Negatives Into Positives

Many people take note of the negatives in their lives and let these things consume their minds. Turn negatives into positives wherever you can so you have something better to focus on. If you lose your job, for example, think of it as an opportunity to change your career path towards something you always wanted. Redo your resume and put yourself out there for better job opportunities. You may find a better paying job or just one you enjoy doing more than you ever did at your old place. There's always a way to turn negatives into positives.

Focus on Your Purpose

When you're having a particularly rough day, focus on your purpose. Think of what you really want to accomplish in life or what you can do to make an impact. If you like gardening, for example, then remind yourself that you're helping maintain nature and providing food for yourself or your family. Maybe you're good at a basic school subject, such as math. Become a tutor and share your skills with others. Maybe you have children that you want to be a good parent to. Spend the day playing with them and teaching them. Purposes like these can help you to see you have a reason for being here and something to share.

These are just a few of the options you have when it comes to bettering your mental health. Do what you need to do to improve your mental well-being and learn to de-stress after particularly hard days. A healthy mind makes it easier to develop a healthy body and improve your lifestyle overall. Drop the negative habits and start forming healthier ones for an improved mindset.
