Handle Outdoor Work With Chiropractic In Mind

By Brandi Goodman

Working outdoors has a unique set of challenges. Many of the jobs that require you to perform outside duties are incredibly physical. You're likely to hurt your back, injure your shoulder, or strain your neck if you don't exercise extreme caution. Keep chiropractic in mind while you handle your job duties to make it through your shift as pain-free as possible.

Improve Your Physical Well-Being

If you know you have a difficult job that's hard on your body, you need to do what you can daily to improve your physical well-being. You should be getting regular exercise that helps to strengthen your core and back so you can handle your job duties easier. It's also wise to stretch out before each shift so your body is prepared for the tasks ahead.

Bend at the Knees

You may have to lift heavy items or equipment when you're working outside. Avoid bending over and using your back to lift when you're doing so. You need to bend at the knees instead and lift with your legs to prevent serious back injury. Whether you're picking up a small box that doesn't weigh much or need to move a heavy item from one location to the next, you always need to consider proper procedures.

Don't Twist

It may seem quicker to twist and reach for something rather than moving over and grabbing it correctly. Though it might save you time, twisting your back won't save you from discomfort. You need to avoid twisting to prevent possible injury and keep your spine safe. You may even want to wear a back brace so it helps you to avoid unnecessary movement and keeps your spine aligned.

Stay Hydrated

Working outdoors -- particularly in hot weather -- can be extremely dehydrating. You may feel overly hot and get dehydrated quickly if you aren't getting enough water. Keep a water bottle with you if possible or take frequent breaks to go and get a drink as needed so you can keep your body hydrated. It will allow you to stay cool and keep your joints flexible and able to handle the work needed.

Chiropractic advice should always be on your mind when you're working outdoors or doing anything strenuous. Back pain can be debilitating and leave you out of work for some time. Maintain your physical well-being and follow chiropractic tips for a pain-free work day. If you still experience discomfort, stop in at The Joint Chiropractic after your shift or on the weekend for an assessment.
