6 Skin Solutions for the Fall and Winter

By Brandi Goodman

Many people keep a skin routine in the summer, particularly by applying sunscreen. Once the weather starts to change and the air gets colder, however, it takes even less for your skin to suffer. With a few simple solutions, you can work to improve the health of your skin and keep it looking supple and smooth.

Keep Your Shower Warm

It may feel great to take a hot shower on a cold day, but the heat can cause damage to your skin. You should keep your shower temperature warm and avoid turning the hot setting up all the way. It will prevent your skin from drying out or becoming damaged.

Avoid Alcohol-Based Products

Alcohol-based products tend to dry out the skin. It's important to avoid these in the winter to prevent excessive dryness that the cold air already causes. A cream-based cleanser is a better option.

Moisturize Regularly

You need to be moisturizing if you have any hope of keeping your skin looking smooth and radiant. This isn't viable for your face. Use moisturizer all over your body -- especially your hands -- to keep them hydrated and prevent cracking.

Wear Waterproof Gloves During Dishwashing

Speaking of the hands, they need to be protected while you're tackling your chores. Make sure to wear waterproof gloves when you wash dishes so the water doesn't cause them to wrinkle and become damaged from the overuse.

Keep Your Sunscreen Routine

Sunscreen isn't only meant for summer. The sun still shines throughout the winter months, after all. Make sure to keep your sunscreen routine and still apply on any parts of exposed skin when you're outdoors. The face is a particularly important area of focus. You should be wearing sunglasses as well to protect your eyes and the skin around them.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is one of the best things you can do for your skin. Keeping yourself hydrated with proper water consumption will keep your skin hydrated as well. You can also eat healthy foods that offer the nutrition necessary for good skin health. Fatty fish, healthy fats, sweet potatoes, and broccoli are some solid choices for improving skin health.

Follow these six skin solutions for the fall and winter and keep your skin looking as good as possible. Failing to do so will result in dried-out, reddened skin that doesn't bode well for your complexion. For a soft feel and good look, moisturizing is key when it's cold.
