Sleep Solutions for Holiday Tensions

By Brandi Goodman

The holidays can make it difficult to sleep. Whether you're staying up late trying to get your wrapping done, or you have so much on your mind that it makes it difficult to drift off, you need to find a better solution. Sleep is necessary -- especially during stressful times that can wear the body down. Do what you can to find ways to rest so you can be at your best.

Practice Deep Breathing

Deep breathing is a practice used to calm the mind. This relaxation technique helps you focus on your breaths, so you don't have time to zone in on what's going on in your head. Before bed, spend at least a few minutes deep breathing. Take a big breath, hold for a few seconds, and let it out. Alternate between breathing through your nose and mouth as well for added focus.

Read Before Bed

Reading is also a great bedtime activity. You're more likely to focus on the story and the voice reading the words inside your head than you are on whatever's stressing you. If the first book you try isn't keeping your attention and you still find your mind wandering, you may need to try another book instead.

Add Exercise to Your Day

If you exercise sometime throughout the day, you'll be more likely to fall asleep easier at night. Don't do it right before bed though. The adrenaline you can get from exercise can cause you to stay awake at the time. Instead, try it in the morning or early afternoon, so your body is fully exhausted and ready for rest come bedtime.

Try Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses different scents to help you achieve various goals. If rest is what you're after, you need a scent that relaxes you and helps you drift off. Lavender is one of the best options. Get an oil diffuser that can run throughout the night without needing to replace water. Let the soothing scent take over and help you carry you to sleep.

Don't let the stress of the holiday season cause you to lose sleep. You need adequate rest to be able to function efficiently throughout the day. Do what you can to try and ease your anxieties and quiet your mind so you can get the sleep you need. You'll have a happier season because of it
