Spinal Fractures and Your Chiropractor

By Randi Morse

One of the tricky things with back pain is getting a proper diagnosis from a primary physician. This is because your back pain may be caused by a variety of different issues, from your feet to your posture to your back muscles and tendons. Without an X-ray or a CT scan, back pain may be misdiagnosed and treated incorrectly, which is why your first step should be to consult with a chiropractor. Osteoporosis is a serious back condition that can cause a lifetime of pain and hurt, and it can be diagnosed incorrectly when it becomes a spinal problem.

Spinal Fractures

Osteoporosis has a nickname, "the silent disease." This is because you often don't know you have it until the condition has progressed significantly. When you first visit a general practitioner, they may say that you are simply dealing with a muscle strain, or that your aging is causing your back pain when you may instead have a spinal fracture. Spinal fractures can be extremely painful and usually start with a sudden, sharp back pain. You may have been lifting something off the floor or bending to pick something up when you feel it. The pain will eventually subside and will simply become an annoying ache; often it will localize exactly where the fracture has happened.

The sad thing is that about one-third of spinal fractures are properly diagnosed, the rest are misdiagnosed. The diagnostic process for a spine fracture is generally to give a complete and thorough medical history, to do a physical exam and then to do some sort of radiological test, like an X-ray or a CT scan.

Chiropractic and Spinal Fractures

When it comes to spinal issues, the first step is to almost always to rest and use pain medication to help alleviate the pain and bring down any swelling. Once the area has rested and had a chance to heal a bit, your chiropractor can adjust the rest of your spine, working with the muscles and tendons as well to give them relief. This will greatly help minimize the pain and may help speed up the healing process as well. Once the area is fully healed, you can then work with your chiropractor on building up your back and core muscles so that the spine is supported thoroughly, minimizing the possibility of a fracture recurring.

In order to have the best spine health possible, take time to visit The Joint Chiropractic. Their experienced chiropractors can help strengthen your body to help you avoid dealing with serious spinal issues.
