5 Methods for Improving Heart Health

By Brandi Goodman

American Heart Month arrives in February. Take the time now to learn just what you can do to improve your overall heart health and, in turn, your well-being. A healthy heart is necessary for a truly healthy life. Five methods will help.

Exercise More Often

Exercise strengthens the heart. Cardio is one of the best things you can do for your heart, but any form of exercise will prove beneficial. A simple walk around the block can do wonders for those who typically don't get much activity throughout their day.

Eat Whole Grains and Fruit

Whole grains provide dietary fiber. Enough fiber in the diet works to improve your blood cholesterol and lower your risk of developing heart disease. This will help your heart remain as healthy as possible. Fruits are ideal to consume as well. Many of them contain antioxidants that ward off disease. They also offer anti-inflammatory properties that reduce inflammation in various parts of the body, such as the heart. Berries are a valid choice, as are apples.

Practice Deep Breathing

Lowering stress levels and remaining calm as often as possible is also beneficial for the heart. Blood pressure tends to rise when people are mad or upset. Practicing deep breathing can help to keep that pressure low so it does not skyrocket to dangerous levels that could damage the heart.

Lose Weight

Though this is easier said than done, losing weight is really necessary for good heart health. The extra weight you carry can cause the heart to work harder than it should. This will make it give out quicker. The unhealthy foods consumed to make this weight appear are also very bad for the heart. It can clog arteries and cause levels of bad cholesterol to rise and damage the vital organ. By exercising and eating whole grains and fruit, you should start to lose some of the weight naturally.

Stop Smoking

Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. You're polluting your heart and other organs with toxic substances. You have a chance to reduce these effects by quitting smoking ASAP. You can talk with your doctor about getting help to quit, such as using a nicotine patch or gum.

Take these methods into consideration when you're looking to improve the health of your heart. A fully functioning cardiovascular system is necessary for maintaining blood pressure and preventing heart disease. People with healthy hearts tend to live longer and be healthier overall.
