The Diet and Exercise You Need Over Winter Break

By Brandi Goodman

Winter break tends to be filled with days spent on the couch, bingeing on holiday treats. Though it's fine to have a day like this once in a while, it shouldn't be the norm. Weight gain and depression are very common this time of year. Get the diet and exercise you need over winter break so you can maintain your well-being.

Fill Up on Protein

Protein helps you feel full for longer. If you're filling up on it, you're less likely to want to binge on unhealthy options. Make sure you're eating plenty of chicken, turkey, cottage cheese, fish, Greek yogurt, and nuts to get your fix.

Make Exercise Fun

Exercise may be the last thing you want to do when you're essentially vacationing. However, it's necessary for your health. Make exercise fun so it's something you actually enjoy doing instead of feeling dread about it. Dance to your favorite songs. Get outside and take a walk to see all the holiday lights and decorations in your neighborhood. Try a water aerobics class at a nearby fitness facility. There are plenty of worthwhile options.

Drink Your Water

Water helps fill your belly as well. You need to stay hydrated and get plenty of water into your day if you hope to keep up on your health. It's wise to drink a cup before a meal so you're likely to eat less.

Use Winter Activities to Your Advantage

You may not get snow in Florida, but there are still some winter activities you can enjoy. Ice skating, for instance, is a popular pastime during the winter season. Many locations open up seasonal, indoor ice skating rinks that you can utilize during this timeframe. You'll get to experience some old-fashioned fun and burn plenty of calories in the process.

Make Sweet, Yet Healthy Snacks

The sweets of the season may be tempting, but they add way too much sugar and too many calories to your day. Make sweet, healthy snacks instead. Mix up a smoothie. Try creating sugar-free candy. Substitute coconut oil instead of butter in a dessert recipe, and opt for a sugar substitute instead of the real thing. You'll still satisfy your sweet tooth, but in a much better way.

Your winter break shouldn't consist of sitting and eating for the majority of your day. This is especially true if all you're eating is junk food. Make sure you're choosing healthy diet and exercise options that are beneficial for your overall well-being. You'll be glad you did once the winter is over.
