Deal With Hunger Pangs Using These Tips

By Paul Rothbart

So many people are trying to lose weight to improve their health. Most find it difficult. A sensible plan of diet and exercise is the best way to drop those extra pounds but there are always those glitches. Perhaps the most common are hunger pangs. They can strike at any time. It may be the middle of a workday, in the evening while watching TV before bed, or any time you were not planning on eating. Certainly, you shouldn't ignore what your body is telling you. However, if you are getting enough nutrition, hunger pangs may not be because you actually need food. Finding a way to reduce them can be a big help to your weight loss goals.

Eat a Good Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. You hear that statement so often it's become a cliche. However tired of it you may be, it is accurate for more than one reason. Hunger pangs tend to occur within 12 hours of the last time you ate. If you skip breakfast, you will feel hungry and could end up consuming far more calories before lunch than you would have gotten from breakfast. Research shows that people who eat a healthy breakfast consume fewer calories throughout the day.

Slow Down

Rushing through a meal can contribute to feeling hungry all day and consuming excess calories. I speak from experience as I have been wolfing down food since I was a child. Taking the time to slow down is worth the effort. The Journal of Endocrinology & Metabolism published the results of a study conducted in 2009 that found eating slowly helps curb hunger pangs by creating a greater sense of fullness and satisfaction. A side benefit to eating slowly is that you really get to enjoy your food.

Spice It Up

If you enjoy spicy foods, eat them for the flavor but reap their other benefits. Research has shown that spices can speed up your metabolism, allowing your body to burn more calories. But that's not all you get from the heat. The aroma of spices such as cayenne pepper, turmeric, ginger, curry, and chili powder can send messages to the brain indicating that the stomach is full. Faster metabolism, fewer hunger pangs. That's a great combination for weight loss.

One of the best things you can do for your body is to maintain a healthy weight. Even the most dedicated people can fall victim to those annoying hunger pangs. Get them under control with these tips and finally shed those extra pounds.
