Tips to Help Keep Your Back Strong
By Rebecca Waldron
There are many ways to injure your back, just as there are proven methods of helping to alleviate back pain or prevent injury. The Joint Chiropractic is there for you when you need them. Chiropractic care can help you get back on your way to feeling better. To better help your chiropractor, here are some tips to prevent injuries to your back.
When you go to lift any object, even smaller ones, lift from the thighs, bend your knees and push up from your legs as you lift the object next to your core. Your core is right above your belly button. Carry any items this way, even if they are a mere five pounds. The reason for this is any extra weight you put into your hands adds to your overall body weight. Your spine has to hold up your body and what you’re carrying, so keep this in mind. If you bend forward without using your knees and leg muscles, you end up putting all of the weight bearing motion on your thin back muscles surrounding your spinal column. This can cause damage to your back in no time.
If you are overweight, you are taxing your spine with more poundage to hold up as you walk, run, or stand. The extra pounds might not seem like much, but if you lose five pounds of fat, you take off 20 pounds of added pressure to your spine. That is a phenomenal difference. The weight of a five-pound sugar bag should be an example. Pick up one of those after you’ve dropped weight and you will realize the added weight you had on your entire body, including your spine. It’s important to realize how much your weight affects your back’s condition. So, if possible, try to shed a few pounds.
Strengthening your core muscles, the muscles in your belly, will help to strengthen your back. You’ll be lifting and using your back with your core muscles that wrap around to your back. Exercises such as crunches, leg lifts, and light yoga will assist in accomplishing the needed strength to help your back grow strong.
Sometimes our best intentions fail, or an accident happens. That’s when The Joint Chiropractic comes in.
