3 Easy Ways to Retain Good Health as You Age
By Donna Stark
A lot of things change as we age and our levels of physical activity are no exception. Our bodies often become slower and our workouts generally become less intense, which makes sense. After all, we are no longer the young, fabulously fit adults we used to be, right? But that doesn't mean we can't aim for a little bit of what we used to have during the aging process. If you want to remain as healthy and youthful as you can, you may need to put in some extra work, but it can be done. Here are three areas of fitness you definitely need to focus on.
Balance
The risk of serious injuries from falls increases with each passing year, so it is vital that you add some exercises that focus on balance into your fitness routine. If you are new to exercise or are having difficulty starting, just begin with some simple weight shifts from one foot to another while holding on to something for support. Then, as your balance improves, you can move on to exercises such as tai chi, cycling, walking lunges, and yoga.
Range of Motion
You may have heard a lot about range of motion at your local chiropractor's office, but do you really know what it is? Range of motion is measured by how well your joints can flex and extend. So, for example, can you move your arms in a wide circle or is that motion limited, or cut off? If your range of motion decreases as you age, discomfort and the risk of injury can increase, so it's important to stay on top of it. You can do so by incorporating stretches into your daily routine and seeing your local chiropractor regularly.
Muscle and Bone Strength
Having trouble getting out of a chair, being unable to carry your groceries to your car, struggling to climb the staircase in your home ... a sure sign of aging is a loss of independence and in many cases, this loss happens from a lack of muscle and bone strength. Building and maintaining both your muscle and bone strength is a must! Keeping your body strong is one of the best ways to ensure that you can take care of yourself and continue doing the things you love. So start with some mild weight-bearing exercises, and if you aren't sure of where or how to start, ask a trainer at your local gym! Just be sure to use the correct form and technique while doing so. You certainly don't want to incur any injuries.
Maintain That Youthful Glow
Your young adult years were a blast but now you have grander years to look forward to! So stay active and take care of your body. It's the best way to live the life you always dreamed of!
