Dealing with Free Food at the Office

You could have the best eating plan for the day, packed your lunch, mapped out your lunchtime walk, and even made plans for the healthy snack you’ll have in the afternoon – but all those healthy plans can go out the window the moment you walk into the break room and are confronted with a big box of pastries. Sure, you can resist for a while, but no man is an island and no woman can resist temptation day in and day out. So, what can you do to help yourself overcome the siren song of sweets in your office kitchenette? Here are a few strategies to help!

Go the Long Way

If you can avoid walking past the jars of sweets, boxes of chocolate, and cubicles of free cream puffs, then that’s a great place to start. People tend to reach for treats that are closer to them, so eliminate the temptation by staying away when you can.

Reward Yourself

If you can resist temptation, then give yourself a pat on the back! Celebrate the fact that you can make healthy eating goals and stick with them, so acknowledge your success to yourself and you’ll create a habit loop that will make resisting next time a whole lot easier.

Don’t Be Mindless

If you do pick up a sweet from the break room, don’t eat it right away. Carry it to your desk, set it down, maybe even put it away in a drawer. Then, think about it. Is it really worth it to you to have it? If you can be mindful of the choices you’re making, then you may be able to resist more easily in the future.

Use Your Willpower Wisely

The most effective habit you can cultivate to avoid unhealthy snacking is simple: You should eat three balanced meals per day. Many people don’t have any idea how many calories snacking adds to their daily input, so make sure you’re eating well during meals so you’ll be less likely to snack, and you’ll have more willpower to resist -- simply because you’re not hungry. It can be just that easy.

You don’t have to let the snacks at the office derail your healthy eating goals. Just be mindful of what you eat and when, remembering your commitment to yourself and your health and you should be able to remember that you don’t really need all that unhealthy stuff!
