How Turning off Phone Emails Works Out

By Sandy Schroeder

Initially smartphones were a leap ahead, letting people email, text, and surf the web wherever they were. Now, not so much. Some of us are wondering what we have gotten ourselves into.

Is Your Phone a Time-Eating Trap?

WellAndGood.com took a look at the relationships many of us have with our phones. One writer called them a “busy trap” that entangles us in our calendars, emails and texts. Some people simply never turn off their phones as they compromise their free hours and quality of sleep.

People also wind up checking phones during meals, while they play with kids, during meetings, on treadmills, or at a red light.

Turning Off Emails

One CEO of a small business said, “I realized that I’m the problem, not my device. So I did something I’d never done before: disconnected my email from my smartphone.”

Normally her phone was flooded with calls, but she set up a way to handle the calls and took a weekend off to attend a family wedding. She had her phone with her for work emergency calls or texts, but none happened.

She sounded a little amazed, but pleased, that there were no emergencies. Her weekend away was a complete success. She spent time with her family without an undercurrent of calls. She said she felt she was prioritizing herself for the first time.

Setting Boundaries

Not everybody can just shut down their phones whenever they please. Being available is essential for many jobs. Wherever you and your phone fit in terms of use and demands, it might be time to set some new boundaries if you suspect they are needed.

Breaking away gradually might let you take charge of your free time. Shutting a phone down for dinner and evening hours could create more time to talk, read and review the day with your family. To free up some time, ask coworkers to call between designated off hours. Or take a test run. Turn your phone completely off while you go for a run. Whatever works may prove to be an opening wedge creating more open time.

Start small and enjoy the effects. Whatever changes you make to regain your life, and your private time, may create a better balance in health, family connections, and work productivity.
