How to Quickly Put Stress In Its Place
By Sandy Schroeder
As fall settles in, many of us feel the tension building. Gone are those leisurely summer breaks. Instead, every day seems to add some new demand. If you can relate, it may be time to put stress in its place with some strong counter strokes.
Before everything gets crazy, see if these stress-reducers from Harvard Health help.
When stress hits, take a deep breath - Your breath goes with you wherever you are. When tension mounts, simply find a quiet spot, lean back, close your eyes and inhale slowly. Exhale, and repeat, letting your breath ease your worries. As relief settles in, make your way back to your day.
Take a minute and refocus - Often I find myself juggling several projects and looking for the exit! When everything needs attention all at once, it's time to simply stop and gather your wits. Close the door or step away from your desk and take a minute to let your mind rest and your brain refocus. When I do this, I feel relaxed enough to take one issue after another and get everything done.
Ask yourself if you are seeing everything - I usually keep an eye on the big picture, but once in a while things get a little too crazy and I find myself bouncing from project to project without getting much done. Escape this self-defeating worry mode by making a quick list of priorities. As you think it through, you should regain your balance and your effectiveness.
Take care of you - Sometimes when deadlines multiply and energy withers, it's easy to skip our healthy daily routines. That daily walk and healthy snack disappear in favor of a burger, fries, and a session in front of the TV. Everybody needs an escape hatch, but daily exercise and healthy meals will help you regain your balance faster. Keep fruits, nuts and fresh veggies on hand, and take short walks whenever you can.
When you are really busy, slow down -That may sound counterproductive, but moving at a slower pace will help you relax, focus and think more clearly. Instead of just running faster, create a slow down mode that lets you methodically take one issue after another. Solving one problem after another will restore your confidence and help you get back on track.
Remember to laugh - It's amazing how quickly your perspective adjusts when you see the funny side. When I face a morning full of challenges, I often take a few minutes to call a friend who always makes me laugh. Together we marvel at how crazy the world really is, and laugh about it all. When I return to work, everything looks easier.
