Recharge Your Workday

By Sandy Schroeder

If you are feeling the burnout and looking for some ways to brighten your workday, that's not surprising. We have all been challenged with the pandemic and relief would be welcome.

MindBodyGreen.com suggests these steps to make your work more meaningful and satisfying.

Look for ways to help others - As you move through your daily projects, watch for opportunities. You may see neighbors or organizations in your community that need assistance and you may be in a position to lend a hand. Reach out to them and set aside time each week to work with them.

Understand your top strengths - Take a little time to look more closely at your work and your habits to spot things that stand out. Your writing, talks, analysis skills or organizational talents may make you a good choice for new jobs or opportunities. Narrow the list and keep your talents in mind for any opportunities that come up with your work.

Make the outdoors part of your day - If we are not careful, it can be all too easy to stay inside from morning to night and miss out on all of nature's gifts.  Experts agree that outside time can lift your spirits, build your concentration abilities, encourage regular exercise, and help you sleep better.  Set aside time daily to walk, bike, hike, read or garden outside. Once you feel the difference of outdoor exposure, you will be hooked. Keep your family involved to reduce stress and stay active.

Create your future path - Most of us have been putting one foot ahead of another as we coped with the challenges of the pandemic, but now we can do more. As we gradually move ahead, it may be time to create a vision of who we want to be in the future. Think about the parts of your job that you enjoy most and how those skills could be expanded. What new groups could work for you? Where would you like to go or be in the next five or 10 years? As your thoughts become clearer, make some calls and start outlining the efforts that will take you there.

Firm up friend and family connections - Reach out and reconnect with all of those people who you have enjoyed knowing. Catch up on their activities and send some updates on what you have been doing. Each connection will lift your spirits and energize your day.

If these suggestions work for you, use them often and look for more ways to make your job work for you.
