Is the Sun Always Bad for Your Health?

By Genevieve Cunningham

Years ago, people didn't really worry about the effects of the sun. It was a given that you were going to spend ample amounts of time with the sun on your skin. By the end of summer, you'd either be burned to a crisp or golden tan. It was just the way of the world. As time has passed, we've learned so much about the sun and its effects on our health. In today's world, we do everything that we can to avoid it. But is it really necessary to go with one extreme or the other? Is the sun always bad for our health? Or do we actually need it? To understand how much sunshine you need in your life, take a look at this guide to managing the sun.

The Sun Gives Us Vitamin D

One of the biggest sources of Vitamin D for our bodies is actually the sun. And we absolutely need this vitamin. Without it, we might experience achy and brittle bones, depression, and various other negative side effects. When we spend time in the sun, we absorb this vitamin through our skin. And because of the need for it in our lives, getting in the sun at least some of the time is essential.

The Sun Manages Moods

The sun is essential for good moods. When we're in the dark or even in artificial light for too long, it can put us in a poor mood. If you want stable moods, you need regular time in the sun. If you're feeling down, try going outside in the sun. For this particular health reason, there isn't a replacement, so getting a little time outside is extremely important.

You Still Have to Be Safe

While it's true that we need some sun in our lives, it's also important to be safe about it. The sun's rays can be damaging. They can lead to wrinkles, age spots, and even cancer. But we also need it, so what do we do? We put on plenty of sunscreen, dress in layers, and then go outdoors. As long as you are willing to step in the shade when needed, wear sunglasses, and keep your skin covered in the proper SPF, you can enjoy the sunshine without the heightened health risk.

Do you need the sun? Absolutely! You need it for warmth and light and for health reasons, too. Just be smart about your time in the sun. With the proper precautions, you can get the right amount of sun for good health without increasing your risk of damage. Be smart, be safe, and enjoy that bright sun.
