How to Change Your Mind About Movement

In our modern world of convenience, we don't move our bodies as much as we used to. We don't have to walk to the store -- we take a car. We don't have to work in the fields -- we buy what we need online. Our lives are so much easier. And yet, our health is definitely suffering. Why? Because movement is so necessary to a healthy and happy life! Of course, because we've had so much convenience for so long, many don't even have the desire to move anymore -- which makes picking up the practice and sticking with it incredibly difficult. If you need more movement in your life, take a look at these tips for getting your mind on board. 

Understand Exercise vs. Movement

Exercise is definitely movement, but not all movement is exercise. If you have a mental aversion to exercise, then don't think about it that way. Think about getting active. Think about joining a group in the community or doing a service project or learning a new sport for fun. The more we move naturally, the more our bodies will grow accustomed, and the easier it will get to stick with long-term activity in your life.

Find Enjoyable Movement

Here's the real key to movement: You have to enjoy it. If you don't like yoga class, don't go. You don't have to! Instead, find an activity that feels good. An activity that you can look forward to. The more you enjoy the movement, the more likely you are to do it regularly, and the more results you'll see in your health.

Get Active Friends

We tend to do what our friends do. If you want to move more, find friends who also embrace the active lifestyle. You might find these friends at the gym, at a local activity, or even online. Get serious about your group, and activity might get a bit easier.

Embrace Change

Change has to happen. We can't stay the same every day for the rest of our lives. Get comfortable with the idea of changing your routine. Get excited about it! About changing your body. About changing your life. The more comfortable you are with change, the easier it will be to alter your lifestyle to include more movement.
