3 Reasons Why Your Bicycle is Your Friend
By Genevieve Cunningham
Bicycles have been around a long time. A really long time. As kids, bikes become a very important part of our lives. Learning is a challenge, and then suddenly, we have a little bit of freedom. As adults we often lose the love for bicycles. Cars take their place and we leave our two-wheeled friends behind. But, as it turns out, bicycles have a place in our lives. If it's been a while since you've taken a ride, take a look at these three reasons why your bicycle should be your best friend moving forward.
Biking Is a Great Workout
One of the best reasons to jump on your bicycle is because it's a terrific workout. Biking burns massive calories -- especially when you stick with it for a period of time. Riding for an hour? You might burn between 500 and 1,000 calories. Along with massive calorie burn, it also works the bottom half of your body. You'll gain definition and strength in your glutes, thighs, and calves. If feeling and appearing fit is a goal, getting and using a bicycle will work.
It's Completely Practical
Another great thing about a bicycle is that it's a practical and economical way to get around. If you don't need the space of a car for a particular errand, you can use your bicycle without using gas and while also strengthening your body. For some, a bicycle even becomes the preferred means of transportation. The more you use it, the more useful it seems, and the more good you get from this basic -- but incredibly beneficial -- resource.
It Makes You Feel Really Good
Riding a bicycle feels good. As your body gets in better shape, you gain confidence and feel better in your own skin. As you build stamina, you can ride for longer periods of time. And it also feels good to your mind. Cycling takes you back to childhood and makes you feel that sense of freedom. It helps your body create endorphins -- the body's happy hormone. It's a nice break from the norm! If you want to feel good in the things that you do, ride a bike for fun, for practical purposes, and for exercise too.
If you haven't been on a bicycle in a while, it's time to give it another try. You never forget how to ride a bike, so hopping on a bike will feel like second nature! And with the good feeling, you can gain some wonderful benefits to your mental and physical health. Give it a shot, and you may find a new hobby, a health booster, and a new way of life all on one.
