Enough Sitting! Get Up and Move!
By Donna Stark
Technology and convenience are two of the most beneficial and damaging words in our vocabulary. They're beneficial because they make our lives easier. We no longer have to wait weeks for correspondence from our loved ones because we can send a text message and receive an answer in seconds, and we don't have to take hours out of our weekend to shop for groceries because we can simply order the things we need online and from the comfort of our homes. But just like so many things in life, when there is a good side, there is also a bad side, and the bad side of these two words is that we tend to live a more sedentary life because of them.
The Bad Side of Sitting
We have much more time on our hands due to technology and convenience than we ever have before, but unfortunately, not everyone uses that time wisely. Instead of using it to stay as physically active as we can, many of us use it to do the exact opposite. Even if you exercise the recommended 30 minutes a day, too much sitting can still lead to serious health consequences. Take a look at the risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle.
- Obesity
- Heart disease
- Diabetes
- Vision problems
- Joint pain
- Blood clots
- Depression
Easy Ways to Increase Your Movement
Although you can never go wrong with a block of daily exercise in your schedule, it is very important to also take a break from sitting. Here are some tips on how you can get out of your chair, stand up, and move your body with small, frequent breaks throughout the day.
- Take your phone calls while standing
- Enjoy a quick walk during your lunch hour
- Forget the email ... walk to your coworker's desk to ask the question instead
- Hide your trash can so you are forced to get up
- Carry a smaller water bottle so you need to make more trips to the water cooler
- Do jumping jacks or lunges during commercials
- Pick the farthest parking spot
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator
- Walk your children during school
- Lap the field while your child is at practice
Healthier Days Ahead
