Do You Suffer From Holiday Anxiety?

By Virginia Laird

Do the holidays give you extreme anxiety? For millions across the nation, this is a real problem. Anxiety, alone can be enough to interrupt your ability to sleep, affect your health, and much more. When this is tangled with the holidays it can be much worse. Health and wellness experts teach that anxiety can be reduced with some easy steps. A few things to try to help reduce your anxiety include:

  • Make sleep a priority throughout the holiday season
  • Establish a budget for your gift buying
  • Stick to a well-balanced diet

Make Sleep a Priority Throughout the Holiday Season

According to research, one sure way to reduce holiday anxiety is to get plenty of sleep. As you prepare for the impending family fun and celebrations, it can be easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the season. Instead of allowing this to keep you busy day and night, it is best that you make it a priority to get some sleep. For the average adult, this is about six hours of sleep each night. However, there are plenty who  need more than this. No matter how much sleep you need, sleep is vital when trying to defeat holiday anxiety.

Establish a Budget for Your Gift Buying

As thousands find themselves elbow deep in debt while shopping for loved ones this holiday season, experts advise that establishing a budget for the gift buying can help reduce anxiety tied to finances. These professionals suggest that you should set a budget that allows you to prevent debt. While it can be nice to lose yourself in the spirit of giving, it is best to remember the reason for the season and keep gift giving simple when necessary. It is truly the thought that counts, not the amount of money spent. Let go of your gift buying anxiety and start sticking closely to a budget to help reduce some of your holiday stress and worry.

Stick to a Well-Balanced Diet

Health and wellness experts suggest that keeping a handle on your health throughout the season can help reduce anxiety. While it can be tempting to indulge in every tasty treat that crosses your path, it is not the best (or healthiest) choice to make. Experts recommend sticking to a well-balanced diet to help maintain good overall health. Following a well-balanced diet can promote good digestion, weight management, and prevention of some health issues including diabetes. Before you decide to go to town on the pumpkin bread, pies, and homemade candies that are ever-present this holiday season, make sure you choose to follow a healthy diet. For most, this includes plenty of fruits and veggies.

As you approach the holiday season, be ready to take the necessary steps to keep anxiety at bay. Happy holidays!
