Break Out of the Ordinary and Seek Excitement
By Donna Kostiew
When was the last time you did something new?
There are few things that erode our mindset and physical condition more than monotony and having a sedentary lifestyle. Our bodies crave movement, creativity, and new experiences. Now, I’m certainly not suggesting that you go off the trail and start chasing every shiny, glittery thing that catches your eye, but keeping your mind stimulated with new ideas and your body physically active helps maintain your creativity and energy.
Keeping Your Brain and Body Young
Here are some ways to add some new exclamation marks into your life.
- Mental stimulation – Any mentally stimulating activity will help maintain focus and clarity in your brain. Try some puzzles, play cards, or download some trivia games on your phone.
- Build your social network – Meeting and making new friends not only adds incredible value to your life, but it also helps reduce loneliness, anxiety, and stress.
- Routine break – Whether you break away for the weekend, or take a mini-break during your week, try switching up your normal routine a bit. By disconnecting from your regular schedule, you open yourself up to new experiences.
- Learn something new – Seek out opportunities to learn a new skill. Whether it is athletic, artistic, or professional you are giving yourself the opportunity to boost your brain and your energy. Also, don’t forget to enjoy the learning process as well.
- Get physical – Research shows that exercise is not only good for the body, but for the brain as well. Exercise encourages the development of nerve cells and connections between brain cells which results in more efficient brain functions.
- Seek inspiration from the arts - Be on the lookout and try to attend as many exhibitions, gallery openings, music performances, festivals, and movies as possible. Invite some friends to make it even more engaging.
- Adopt a pet – Bringing a new pet into your home will not only keep you more active by taking care of it, but it will also bring unconditional love, improved health, and plenty of emotional benefits to your life.
- Try new foods/wine – It’s time to try a new flavor. Experimenting with new foods will expand the amount of nutrition your body gets, will encourage you to cook more, and will offer some wonderful moments to bond with friends and family.
