Why Honesty is Necessary at Your Chiropractic Visit
By Genevieve Cunningham
There seems to be one very important rule at any doctor’s visit that far too many people forget: Be honest! Doctors are likely to ask you questions that require well-thought out and honest replies. And the answers that you give greatly affect any further treatment that you may receive, which also means that it greatly affects any future success. But still, many people feel embarrassed or ashamed when they don’t follow the doctor’s orders, and so little white lies slip out before you think better of it. And when it comes to getting chiropractic care, honesty is more important than ever. Take a look at these reasons to get real with your chiropractor in order to have the most success.
Each Session May Build Upon the Last
Chiropractic care is best used on a regular basis. While one treatment may do your body some good, it won’t be nearly as effective as long-term care. But if you’re not honest with your chiropractor about how you feel, you may not get the proper treatment plan that truly builds better health. Each individual treatment is meant to further your health in a particular direction; each session works together to find ultimate wellness. If you haven’t been feeling well, or you haven’t kept up with exercises that were asked of you, let your chiropractor know so that they’ll have an idea of what’s really working and what’s not.
Every Symptom May Require a Different Approach
It’s especially important to be forthcoming with your particular symptoms. While the chiropractor will definitely focus on your spine, they may focus on a different area depending on your description of discomfort. If your neck hurts, tell them! If your back hurts in three different areas, let them know! It can also be helpful to mention any discomforts that seemingly have nothing to do with your spine. If you’re getting sick more than usual, suffering from migraines, or staying up all night due to insomnia, these should also be mentioned to the chiropractor. An unhealthy spine brings about more negative side effects than you may know, so whether you think it’s important or not, mention it in order to get the best care.
Doctor-Patient Relationships are Based on Trust
Any doctor-patient relationship is built on trust. This is why you click with some doctors and not with others … because you feel a sense of trust with them. On your end, the chiropractor has to trust you as well. If they think you’re withholding information or deliberately lying, they won’t trust what you say, and they won’t know how to help you most effectively. Build that solid relationship with your chiropractor, and you’ll both benefit from the improved care.
