How to Boost Mental Health With Physical Activity

By Genevieve Cunningham

There is so much information out there about mental health. With the increase in mental health awareness, tips and advice are more rampant than ever. And this is a good thing! Mental health is critical for general wellness and overall happiness. But for some people, even the most basic advice just doesn’t seem to work. Besides seeing a professional (which is a great idea!), what else can you do? Surprisingly, it might help to start with your physical health. Take a look at how mental and physical wellness are linked, and what you can do to improve both.

Why Does It Matter?

Many people are tempted to ignore mental health issues, and instead focus solely on physical health. While we all want to look and feel good physically, it doesn’t really matter if we’re feeling depressed or anxious or confused on the inside. Mental health is what keeps us happy, stable, and productive. If we ignore this part of our health, we are ignoring one of the most important aspects of living a fulfilled life.

How are These Connected?

While many might see the importance of taking care of both mental and physical traits, how can one lead to the other? Mental health is affected by so many different factors. Think about when a person is terminally ill or debilitatingly sick. It’s easy to suffer from the blues or even major depression. Why? Because they’re linked! When the body suffers, so too can the mind. And when the body sees a rise in health, mental health may see a boost as well. It also helps that physical movement creates endorphins and adrenaline in the body … two important hormones that lead to mood stability and happiness.

What Kind of Physical Activity is Necessary?

One of the best things about physical activity and mental health is that it doesn’t matter what you do as long as you’re moving. Love to run? Go for it. Interested in soccer? Join a local team of friends. Try a hike or a simple walk. Do some yoga. Get into archery or jiu jitsu. Just get moving regularly in order to boost your physical health and enhance your mental function and wellness as well.

Taking care of your mental health is so important. Without good mental health, we may feel sad, angry, moody, or any wide range of emotions. We may not function as well as we like or be as successful as we hope to be. But with just a little bit of physical activity, you may notice your mental health take a turn for the better. Get up and get active, and you may be able to protect your body and mind in one fell swoop.
